Having an injured smile can be terrifying and discouraging all at the same time. However, there are things you can do to improve the situation, and our dedicated dental team is more than happy to help you do just that!
Today, Dr. Pam Crumrine would like to give you the tips you need to take care of your smile right after you’ve knocked out a permanent tooth. Those tips are:
Retrieve the tooth: After your tooth has fallen out of your mouth, retrieve it and hold it by the crown. The crown is the portion of the tooth that was visible when it was still in the smile. Then, if the tooth is dirty, rinse off the roots with water. As you wash the tooth, please do not scrub it. Scrubbing will remove the necessary tissue fragments.
Try to put the tooth back in place: If possible, gently slide the tooth back into its socket. Do not force it into place, and do not put it back into the socket the wrong way. If this is not possible, put the tooth in a small container of milk or in a cup of water that contains a pinch of table salt.
See your dentist: It’s important to see your dentist as soon as possible, especially because the highest chance of you saving your tooth is within 1 hour of it being knocked out of place.
